EXPECTATIONS
- P.E. days this term are: Tuesday– Badminton and Thursday - outdoors Rugby. Please wear your P.E. kit to school on Tuesdays and Thursdays (House T-shirt, plain black (or dark Navy) shorts or joggers/leggins, trainers and School Jumper (no hoodies please).
– On Monday, Homework & Spellings will be given to your child to stick in their Homework Book. Homework Books, online apps and Reading Records need to be completed and, if necessary, brought into school on Friday for your teacher to check. In Year 6, the expectation is that Homework should total around 2 hours a week: this should be a combination of spelling practice, online apps and set homework tasks (Maths/English/Foundation).
– Reading at home in Year 6 this should happen every day. This can be in a variety of forms, such as: children reading independently, sharing a chapter together and reading on Fonetti (if your teacher has given you access). Also, remember reading to your child and listening to audiobooks is extremely beneficial too! Reading Records should be signed off by an adult, but we expect Year 6 children to record their own independent reading journey themselves. Reading Records should be transferred between home and school every day. Please ensure Accelerated Reader quizzes are completed within 48 hours of finishing the book. See below for the links to assist with reading using apps and AR Quizzes. We expect every child to complete a minimum of 3 quizzes every term.

TERM 1 CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
Maths
In Term 2, Year 6 pupils will explore a rich variety of mathematical topics designed to build confidence and fluency in working with fractions, different units of measure and shape. The term begins with deepening the understanding of fractions by comparing and ordering. We then move onto mixed numbers and improper fractions. As our confidence with fractions continues to grow, we divide fractions by integers. Our next unit of study works with units of measure and how to convert one unit of measure to another. With these conversion skills secure, we then apply them to a problem solving and reasoning context. Towards the end of term, shape is our focus with an emphasis on position and direction: translation and reflection.
English
This term in English, Year 6 are exploring Gender Swapped Greek Myths by Karrie Fransman and Jonathan Plackett. We are diving into the fascinating world of Ancient Greek myths — but with a twist! Pupils will analyse how the authors have reimagined traditional tales and use this inspiration to write their own sequels, developing their characterisation skills, exploring the authors’ style, and crafting engaging dialogue. Later in the term, we will shift our focus to non-fiction writing by creating newspaper reports, where pupils will apply their growing understanding of the active and passive voice to produce clear, informative, and well-structured articles.
Guided Reading
In Guided Reading this term, Year 6 will be exploring a range of Greek myths, using these fascinating stories to practise key reading comprehension strategies through a variety of VIPERS question types. We will also be immersing ourselves in the language and structure of newspaper reports, helping us to recognise how information is presented and how vocabulary choices can influence the reader. Alongside this, we will continue to enjoy our class reader, The Nowhere Emporium — the mystery deepens as we discover what will happen next to Daniel!
Foundation
- DT: Textiles. This term we evaluate textile designs for a Christmas decoration and design our own considering stitching and aesthetics. Our DT skills of product evaluation, planning, making – including the skill of sewing, adapting and presenting our work are all contained withing this unit.
- P.E. Tuesday - Badminton: Year 6 are developing their skills in Badminton. Pupils will learn the key techniques of serving, rallying, and controlling the shuttlecock with increasing accuracy and consistency. They will explore different types of shots, such as the forehand, backhand, and overhead clear, while focusing on movement, coordination, and positioning on the court. Through a series of engaging activities and mini-games, pupils will develop their tactical understanding by learning how to outwit opponents and work effectively in both singles and doubles play. By the end of the unit, they will be able to demonstrate confidence, control, and respect for the rules of this fast-paced and skilful game.
- PE Thursday- Rugby: This term we are lucky enough to be joined by a professional coach from the outreach team at Bath Rugby. Pupils will focus on building teamwork, communication, and tactical awareness while learning the key techniques of passing, catching, dodging, and tagging. They will explore how to move effectively with and without the ball, make quick decisions in game situations, and understand the importance of space and positioning. Through fun drills and small-sided games, pupils will practise playing fairly, supporting their teammates, and showing good sportsmanship. By the end of the unit, they will be ready to put their skills into action in exciting, fast-paced Tag Rugby matches.
- Computing: In Computing this term, Year 6 are exploring the concept of variables in programming through creative projects in Scratch. We begin by discovering what variables are and connecting them to real-world examples of values that can change, such as scores or timers. Pupils will then use variables to design and program a working scoreboard simulation. Following the Use–Modify–Create model, learners will first explore and experiment with existing Scratch projects, then adapt them before creating their own unique games. Along the way, they will develop their design skills and apply their understanding of variables to refine and improve their final projects.
- History: In this unit, we will explore the world of The Maya, and debate whether they should still be remembered today as a significant culture. We will begin by learning about the lives of the Maya today, before focusing on Maya architectural achievements, their religion and surviving writings. We will also study the possible reasons why the Maya city states declined after 900AD, looking at conspiracy theories and consider whether everything we read online is reliable. We will consider issues faced when studying a culture where only limited types of evidence are available, predominantly archaeological evidence. Our Big Finish will be a creative activity - making a Maya-style codex.
- PHSE: Digital Wellbeing. This term, we consider how the internet can have a positive and negative impact so looking after mental health and wellbeing is essential. We understand the importance of staying safe online when using digital technology and learn how to ensure relationships are positive and respectful when communicating online.
- RE: What does it mean to be a: Roman Catholic, Methodist and Protestant? We consider how Roman Catholic, Methodist and Protestant beliefs compare and how Christians in different parts of the world practice their faith – similarities and differences.
- Science: Animals Including Humans. This term, children explore the human circulatory system and describe functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood. We will recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way in which bodies function. We will also learn how nutrients and water are transported within animals, including humans.
- Music: In Music this term, Year 6 are taking part in the Let’s Rock unit from Charanga. This exciting unit celebrates rock music and helps pupils develop their performance, composition, and listening skills. They will explore the key features of rock through listening and appraising famous songs, learning to sing and play along with confidence and attitude! Pupils will also have opportunities to improvise and compose their own rock-inspired pieces, developing a sense of rhythm, dynamics, and teamwork as they perform together. By the end of the unit, everyone will have had a chance to truly rock out while deepening their understanding of this powerful and influential musical genre.
