Year 3
Welcome to Year 3 at Paulton Junior School!
Term 5
Welcome back to Term 5 - how quickly time flies!
Hopefully, we can avoid the April showers this term, but please ensure your child has the appropriate clothing with them for the weather.
PE, Forest School and Clubs in Term 5
PE Schedule for Term 5
PE will be on Wednesday and Friday during Term 5.
On Wednesdays, we’ll be heading off for swimming lessons—no need for PE kit, but don’t forget swimming gear (costume, towel, swimming hat, goggles and a bag to keep everything together, please).
On Fridays, we’ll be diving into athletics, so make sure your child comes dressed in their full PE kit, including their house-coloured top and trainers ready to run, jump and throw.
Forest School
Forest School has moved to Tuesdays this term—fingers crossed for drier weather, but we all know what April’s like! Please make sure your child has a waterproof coat in school each week, just in case. We’re hopefully waving goodbye to wellies, but better safe than soggy.
Clubs
Clubs will restart in Term 5, running during Weeks 2 to 5, and will continue into Term 6. Keep an eye out for sign-up details and timetables.
(Just a gentle reminder: if your child can’t make a club session, please let the teacher running it know.)
Curriculum Information for Term 5
English
This term in English, we’ll be diving into The Song of the Nightingale by Tanya Landman, a beautiful origin story. Inspired by this text, children will be writing their own origin tales—think “How the leopard got its spots” or “How the owl got its hoot.” We'll also switch gears to sharpen our non-fiction writing skills with an Eyewitness Report, capturing the dramatic events from the story as if they saw them unfold!
In Guided Reading, we’ll be enjoying The Boy Who Grew Dragons—expect humour, adventure, and (unsurprisingly) dragons! It's the perfect read to fuel imagination and build those comprehension muscles.
Maths
We’re back into fractions, focusing on adding, subtracting, and finding fractions of objects and amounts. Then, it's on to money—practical, purposeful, and perfect for real-world maths. Later in the term, we’ll begin exploring time, so expect lots of talk about clocks and timetables!
Foundation Subjects
🔬 Science – We’ll be studying light and what causes day and night, uncovering how the Earth’s movement creates the daily rhythm of life.
🎨 Art – Inspired by Antoni Gaudí, we’ll be experimenting with mosaics and clay, linking our art to our ongoing focus on environmental themes—especially saving the oceans. Beautiful, meaningful, and maybe a little bit messy!
💭 PSHE – Our topic this term is Diverse Britain: What does it mean to be British? We’ll explore identity, community, and what brings us together.
💻 Computing – We'll step into the world of desktop publishing, learning how to create eye-catching, informative media using digital tools.
🛕 RE – We begin exploring Hinduism: What does it mean to be a Hindu? How might Hindus show commitment to their faith? We'll discover beliefs, traditions, and key practices.
🏰 History – We’re bringing history close to home with a deep dive into the local area, focusing on mining and canal history. A walk to Paulton Basin will help bring the past to life!
🎾 PE – This term, we’re swimming on Wednesdays (don’t forget your kit!) and enjoying athletics on Fridays, building stamina, speed and technique for running, jumping and throwing.
🌳 Forest School – We’ll be identifying and classifying different trees and going on minibeast hunts—perfect for curious minds and muddy knees.
🥁 Music – We continue with Djembe drumming, developing rhythm, teamwork and a serious sense of groove.
We’re looking forward to another term packed with creativity, discovery, and hands-on learning. Let’s go! 💥📚🌍
Important Information
Healthy Snacks - NO NUT School
We encourage healthy eating, so children can bring fruit for a playtime snack. Please remember that we are a nut-free school due to severe allergies amongst students and staff.
Also, every child needs to bring a water bottle to school daily for use throughout the day. Please note that fizzy or flavoured drinks are not allowed.
School Uniform
All children are expected to wear the correct school uniform. Full details on the school uniform can be found on our website.
Communication
Please contact the office regarding anything you require immediate advice on or for any urgent messages. Also, please continue to use the office phone line to report your child’s absence. Please feel free to write comments in their homework book too.
Open Door Friday
Every Friday after school, you are invited to come into the classroom to share and look at your child’s work. It's a great opportunity to see what they’ve been up to!

Homework will vary each week between English, Maths or Foundation subjects and children will also have weekly spelling tasks to be completed at home.
Reading
We expect children to read at home daily and for this to be recorded in their reading records, a minimum of 3 times per week. Please ensure reading records are in school every day.
Online Platforms
Please also ensure that online platforms, including TTR and Nessy, are used as part of weekly homework tasks. Logins should be in your child’s reading record.

Note to parents/ carers
It is crucial that all children become confident with their times-tables as they will be taking the Year 4 times table test in July 2026. Understanding and rapid recall of multiplication facts (and other number facts) is the cornerstone to fluent mathematics.
We are looking forward to another term of fabulous learning, great teamwork and enjoyment for all.
Many thanks for your continued support,
Mr Barge, Mrs Mallon and Mrs Walker
